The Secrets of a Successful Corporate Turnaround

Por: Pedro Guizzo

When a company is in a serious financial crisis, if management are unable to abandon unsuccessful habits and face the need for profound change, they will continue to destroy value.

A successful turnaround requires urgent analysis and decisions in three areas: financial practice and structure; operations (where and how value is created); and in most cases, ownership.

This is the first book in the field of corporate management to consolidate the information, techniques and methods involved in all these three areas of a company restructuring.

Further, it is deep, comprehensive and easy to understand. Each chapter is, effectively, an education on one major aspect of management of a business – in more depth, with more scope, and probably more clearly expressed than you can find elsewhere.

The result is perhaps the most all-encompassing book yet provided on the subject – and undoubtedly one of the easiest to read: a complete, empowering manual, providing all the secrets of a successful corporate restructuring, for anyone involved in a turnaround at any level.

While advising executives and entrepreneurs to work with an experienced professional turnaround specialist, this book enables them to master and understand the processes that will save a company.

Pedro Guizzo has participated in more than 20 corporate turnarounds and more than 200 M&A processes, concluding debt restructurings, M&A transactions and taking leading managing roles in Brazil and worldwide.

He has helped companies face and overcome their most critical moments of financial crisis in a variety of roles: as a turnaround consultant or adviser, as the main executive in charge (CEO), or as an active board member. In 2015 he founded the Turnaround Management program for executives at the Getúlio Vargas Foundation of Brazil, and has been the course’s coordinator and head lecturer since its inception.

Turnarounder was first published in Portuguese in 2020. Pedro is also the author of Tirando o Bode da Sala (“Getting the Elephant out of the Room”), a book on negotiation and leadership, published in Brazil in 2022, and numerous contributions to publications such as MIT Sloan Management Review, HSM Management, Debt Business, and leading Brazilian news media including JOTA, Jornal Valor and O Estado de Sao Paulo.

As well as being a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA Charterholder), he has numerous other certifications, including PMP form the Project Management Institute, and certifications as portfolio manager by the highest certifying organizations in Brazil, including the Brazilian Securities and Exchange Commission. He has a degree in Business Administration from the Getúlio Vargas Foundation of São Paulo and an MBA from the Judge Business School of Cambridge University, UK.
